Description

What we now call “the metaverse” has deep roots in early platforms such as VRML, Second Life, OpenSim, and IMVU. Today, creators navigate a far more diverse ecosystem that includes VRChat, Horizon Worlds, Roblox, Engage, and many others. These platforms—whether offering mediated or unmediated experiences—often grow into thriving communities and host expansive worlds built by organizers, developers, and users alike.

But with opportunity comes complexity. What are the biggest challenges in building, sustaining, and monetizing these virtual worlds? What becomes of the communities that form when a platform shutters or evolves beyond recognition? And how can worldbuilders design for longevity in a landscape defined by rapid technological change?

This panel brings together seasoned metaverse pioneers to share their experiences in worldbuilding across generations of platforms. We’ll explore how they’ve future proofed their creations, what they’ve learned from platform transitions, and how they envision the next era of the metaverse.

The panel will be moderated by LA SIGGRAPH Chapter Past Chair Ed Lantz.
